Sensorial Materials

Montessori Sensorial Materials are designed to refine children’s senses (sight, touch, sound, smell, taste). Rooted in Montessori’s belief that sensory exploration builds cognitive foundations, these tools focus on isolation of a single sense (e.g., Color Tablets for visual discrimination, Touch Boards for texture) and self-correction (e.g., mismatched Geometric Solids won’t fit their bases).
By engaging hands-on, kids develop focus, precision, and the ability to classify/order sensory information—skills that lay groundwork for math, language, and scientific thinking. Common examples include the Pink Tower (size), Sound Cylinders (auditory), and Smelling Bottles (olfactory).
